We start with a used food grade 55 gallon steel barrel. We then use a giant can opener to cut the top off. We add drain holes to the bottom of the barrel so rain water can escape, and ventilation holes to the sides to allow air and oxygen flow. The result is a clean looking ready-to-use burn barrel.​​​

We do recommend elevating burn barrels slightly off the ground and keeping them level using cinder blocks or brick pavers. This reduces fire risk and prolongs the life of the barrel.
